The super herbs in our blend
About the
Formula
Made with “blood sugar botanicals”
When it comes to maintaining normal, healthy blood sugar levels and normal insulin metabolism with the goal of weight management and healthy hormones (especially insulin and testosterone), herbalists turn to a mix of bitter and warming herbs that help to support metabolism. Healthy insulin sensitivity is key for hormone balance, as insulin drives excess androgen production and unbound estrogen – which can affect cycle length, flow, cravings, facial hair, metabolism, and more.*
GlucoBitters is formulated with ‘blood sugar bitters:’ our term for digestive herbs rich in bitter phytochemicals that support not only digestion, but may help support healthy insulin sensitivity on a cellular level.* When the bitter compounds in plants are detected by our taste buds, a cascade of messages gets sent to the brain triggering the release of digestive fluids to prepare your GI tract for the optimal breakdown of your meal.
Studies are just beginning to uncover that the bitter alkaloids in key botanicals also support the secretion of a gut hormone called GLP-1, which aids metabolism by helping to balance our hunger cues, supporting the normal, healthy release of insulin, and helping our cells uptake glucose from food to be used for energy. The release of GLP-1, triggered by bitter phytochemicals, also helps to maintain healthy blood sugar and support healthy weight management, when paired with a sensible diet and consistent exercise.
The bitter botanicals within this blend include Gymnema, Bitter Melon, Gentian, Cinnamon, and more. Gymnema contains phytochemicals called gymnemic acids which support the way that the body responds to glucose. This class of plant compounds also changes the way the taste buds sense and perceive sugar, helping us get a hold on our occasional cravings so that we can make choices that support our long term goals.
Bitter Melon contains two phytonutrients called polypeptide-P and charantin, which aid healthy insulin on a cellular level and encourage the body’s normal uptake of glucose in the liver, muscles, and adipose tissue. Gentian’s bitter iridoid glycosides help stimulate the normal secretion of GLP-1 in the gut, while Cinnamon has been suggested to support healthy hormone and insulin levels in those with hormonal complaints.*

The storybehind the formula
Last year, I decided to get serious about balancing my blood sugar so that I could finally take my health to the next level and reach my fitness goals. Besides weight lifting – which was life changing for me – one thing I implemented was taking a shot of apple cider vinegar before meals, as studies suggest that this can help support and help balance blood glucose thanks to the acetic acid content.*
Vinegar was so effective for me that I went back to my herbalist roots and added a layer of functionality by infusing full strength blood-sugar-balancing herbs into a base of cider vinegar instead of alcohol or glycerin. I found this plant-powered formula to be even more efficacious than plain vinegar alone, and have been utilizing it ever since before carb-heavy meals, sweets and desserts (especially if I’m indulging without additional protein and fiber to dull the effects). I now bring it with me everywhere I go and gladly take a ‘shot’ in a glass of water at restaurants and while traveling to continue hitting my goals.*
